Services for Children

Children with CAS can successfully learn more than one language, although symptoms may present differently because languages vary in their sounds, word shapes and stress patterns.

Assessment
Consider both languages, including:
Speech sounds (phonemes)
Phonology
Word shapes
Stress patterns

Treatment
Motor learning principles remain the same across languages.
Target speech features shared by both languages where possible to encourage generalisation.
Therapy should support all of the child's languages whenever possible.

Home Language (L1)
Using the home language supports learning.
Strong L1 skills help development of a second language.
Treating the home language does not hinder learning another language.
Bilingual intervention is recommended whenever possible.
